A shipping container swimming pool is built from a 20ft, 40ft, or custom-length steel container that has been reinforced, waterproofed, and fitted out as a pool shell rather than a cargo box. Usually, the interior wall panel consists of a corrugated steel sheet approximately 1.2 mm in thickness. However, one side of this structure needs to be altered and fitted with a glass view window somewhere between 30 and 35 mm thick, allowing swimmers to observe what is happening inside, while enabling the construction to be strong enough to withstand compressive forces.
The shell of the pool is generally made from a 6mm thick Q235-B steel plate and is welded instead of bolted together, which is why typical pools have depths of up to 2.5 meters in the deep end when custom-made. Three things tend to pull property owners and developers toward a prefab pool container instead of a poured one: timeline, site disruption, and running cost.
A container pool is built to travel. Because the shell started life as a shipping container, it can be relocated by truck or ship if a property changes hands or a project moves to a new site, which is not something a poured concrete pool can offer.
Minimal on-site Construction
Around 90% of a shipping container pool is factory-built. By the time the pool is delivered, the plumbing, electrical wiring, and filtration systems are already installed. Therefore, the only thing that needs to be done at the site is to build a flat pad and have water, sewerage, and power supply. Because a container swimming pool arrives close to finished, the on-site portion of a project is short compared with a poured build. Site preparation involves grading a level, load-bearing pad, since the unit is typically installed above-ground rather than excavated into a hole. The container pool is then delivered by flatbed and set in place with a crane in a single day for most residential projects.
Utility hookups, including water supply, drainage, and an electrical connection for the pump and filtration system, follow next. For off-grid or remote sites, some buyers pair a container pool’s heater and pump load with a mobile solar container to avoid running a new grid connection to the pad. Once utilities are live, the pool is filled and commissioned, and a straightforward container pool installation timeline from delivery to first swim is usually measured in days rather than the months a poured pool requires.
Regardless of the material used in the shell, a swimming pool is still a system of treated water and requires just as much discipline in terms of chemical levels as residential pools. According to the CDC, pool water should always be kept at a pH of 7.0-7.8 and free chlorine levels should be kept at a minimum of 1 ppm, and 2 ppm when a stabilizing agent like cyanuric acid is used, since the effectiveness of chlorine in killing the most common microorganisms in swimming pool water depends on both levels remaining in the “recommended zone.”
The built-in heating and active filtration system of a Premium-level pool make it easier to maintain that temperature year-round, since these equipment systems are calibrated at the factory. However, pool owners should still test the water at least once per day when it is being used heavily. Moreover, parents must supervise young children when using a pool in their backyard.
In addition to its practical application, a container swimming pool functions as a designer pool. The visible steel perimeter and glass panel, as well as simple rectilinearity, build its unique appearance which typical concrete pools cannot achieve without spending substantial resources on finishing.
